HMS Victory - Foremast Section

HMS Victory is the name of Lord Nelson’s Flagship, on which he was killed at Trafalgar. The battle of Trafalgar was one of the most famous battles in history, bitterly fought on the 21st October 1805.

Today HMS Victory is birthed at Portsmouth dockyard and currently has a dual role as the Flagship of the First Sea Lord and as a living museum to the Georgian Navy.

This model of the HMAS Victory foremast was constructed in circa 2007. Tex had already built a full-scale model of the ship and was further inspired to create this larger scale foremast as he found this section fascinating historically. At the time that he built the model, he believed that the forecastle deck was the deck on which Lord Nelson was shot during the Battle of Trafalgar. In writing this post, we discovered that Lord Nelson was shot on the quarterdeck, much to Tex's surprise!

This model is a fully working scale model; all the lines, blocks, pulleys, cleats, etc are fully operational. The yards are able to be raised, lowered and turned directionally by lines as they would be on the real ship.

Every tiny pulley was hand carved from meranti timber and housed a small brass pulley wheel inside. All the decking boards were correctly sized and patterned, nailed down with miniature brass nails.

"I was meticulous in my research to ensure it was as close as possible to the real thing." - Tex

The model was donated to the Naval Association Bundamba Subsection for display in their headquarters.

A needle slipping through the finger doesn't help... I guess it could be DNA authenticated.
