Vietnam Vet Memorial - Goodna RSL
With today being ANZAC day, and the family gathering in the backyard under Dad's newly erected flag pole to share a beer and remember, I thought it would be timely to post this project.
A few years ago now, Tex was asked to be involved in the design of a memorial commissioned by the RSL. One side was to be a dedication to Vietnam Veterans, and the other was to represent the RSL.
Tex wanted the Vietnam Veteran side to represent not only how the public viewed the Vietnam war, but also his recollection of battles when he had served his two tours of Vietnam. The final piece included a collage created by Tex which include images of soldiers and choppers in battle in Vietnam. This collage was then laser printed in to the marble memorial.
The other side of the memorial depicted the Army, Navy, Air Force and Nurses (which is the depiction on the RSL badge) overlooking Flanders Field. As with most of Dad's creations, the family tends to get roped in somehow. This time, Sarah, Marcus, Matt and our family friend Troy McIntosh were dressed up to represent each of the services.
We had a lot of fun in the creation of the memorial and dressing up to represent our ancestors. But, as is appropriate, the final piece represents the true meaning of ANZAC day and the purpose of the RSL, which is honouring the memory of both past and present serving members in all services.
The finished memorial stands at the entrance to the Goodna RSL.
Lest We Forget.
